Trump Reverses on Mail-In Voting, Urges Republicans to Vote By Mail After Supreme Court Blocks Plan

In a stunning reversal, President Donald Trump urged Republicans to vote early, absentee, and by mail for the 2026 midterms after the Supreme Court blocked his plan to restrict mail voting. Trump himself voted by mail in Florida’s Aug 18 primary.

For six years, Donald Trump told America that voting by mail was corrupt, rigged, and fraudulent. He called it a threat to democracy.

This weekend, he told Republicans to do it.

In a stunning and desperate reversal just weeks before the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump posted a video to Truth Social on Saturday urging every Republican to vote by mail, vote early, or vote in person — whatever it takes to win.

The message marks a complete 180-degree turn from his years-long crusade to restrict and even eliminate mail-in voting.

What Trump Actually Said

The video was short, direct, and completely different from his past rhetoric.

Trump said:

“Republicans must WIN the 2026 Midterm Elections, and we must use every appropriate tool — Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail, or in-person, we must ‘swamp’ the Radical Left Dumocrats with massive turnout! SO IMPORTANT — PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP”

In the same post, he directed supporters to his campaign’s new turnout website, SwampTheVoteUSA.com, with a simple message: “Vote early. Vote by mail. Or vote in person on Election Day.”

The man who built his political brand attacking mail-in voting is now begging his base to use it.

The Hypocrisy: Trump Votes By Mail Himself

Here is the part Trump didn’t mention in the video.

While President Trump has staged a rhetorical and legal assault against voting by mail, he has used the method himself to cast his own ballots for years.

Just two months ago, in Florida’s August 18, 2026 Republican primary, President Trump voted by mail.

Critics say the strategy is clear: The RNC and the Trump campaign want Republicans to vote by mail, but they want to stop Democrats from doing the same. It is about picking the voters, not letting the voters pick their representatives.

Why The Sudden Flip-Flop? He Lost at the Supreme Court

This reversal did not happen because Trump changed his mind. It happened because he lost in court.

Since March 2026, the Trump administration has been pushing aggressively to restrict mail voting. It started with a sweeping executive order and was followed by a controversial rule from the U.S. Postal Service that would have required federal pre-clearance of state mail-voting lists.

Election officials in both red and blue states panicked. They warned the plan would have catastrophic consequences, upend vote-by-mail systems nationwide, and potentially disenfranchise millions of voters right before the midterms.

Then came the hammer.

On September 14, the Supreme Court blocked Trump’s plan. In a major rebuke, the justices rejected his proposal to change how mail ballots are sent to voters across the country.

After multiple failed attempts to severely restrict voting by mail, the President appears to be completely reversing course because he has no other choice.

Desperation Mode: Polls Show GOP In Trouble

The timing tells you everything.

The 2026 midterms are less than a month away, and Republicans are in trouble.

A September Harvard CAPS / Harris Poll shows Democrats now hold a 2-point lead among likely voters in the midterm horserace, with President Trump’s approval hitting a low of 42%.

The poll also revealed that Trump’s push to eliminate mail-in voting is deeply unpopular. Only 49% of Americans support eliminating mail-in voting, making it one of his least popular policies, alongside placing a 15% tariff on all imports.

An NPR/Marist poll found that Democrats and Independents intend to vote by mail or vote early at much higher rates than Republicans.

The data is brutal for the GOP. According to MIT’s Election Data & Science Lab, in the 2020 presidential election during the pandemic, 60% of Democrats used mail ballots compared with just 32% of Republicans. In 2024, that gap continued to shrink Republican turnout.

Trump finally realized his own attacks on mail voting were suppressing his own voters.

With affordability now the top concern for voters — with even Alaskans who voted for Trump three times telling reporters they are disappointed — the campaign can no longer afford to tell Republicans to stay home on Election Day.

What This Means For The 2026 Midterms

This is now a turnout war.

Trump’s message is no longer about fraud. It is about numbers. His campaign wants to “swamp” Democrats with massive turnout, using every tool available.

But the damage may already be done. For years, Republican voters have been told that voting by mail is cheating. Now they are being told it is patriotic. Will they listen?

The Supreme Court has preserved vote-by-mail for this election, but the political battle over how America votes is far from over.

What do you think? Is Trump’s reversal a smart strategic move to win the midterms, or is it pure hypocrisy after years of calling mail voting rigged?
